New Beginnings @ Vertgen Farms/Island Flower Farm

Hey Friends, 🌊🌊🌊 We love sharing our story with you. Stories about dream chasing, rising in the midst of failure, stories of adventure, and stories that inspire and encourage, and especially stories that let you know we aren’t really all that different at the end of the day.

Today marks the beginning of a new story for us at the farm. But what’s a new story without remembering the path that led us here?

5 years ago Chris & I met on a blind date by the beach. Some girls get flowers, I got a pint overflowing of his favourite cherry tomatoes. We drank hollowed out French melons filled with summer cocktails and strolled his farm, harvesting raspberries and laughing.

4 years ago I dropped out of university to farm full time. I’m the youngest child in my family, which means I’m as stubborn as they come. I wanted a piece of the farm to myself, and Chris saw my tenacity. He built me my first flower garden. He taught me all he knew about caring for plants, sowing seeds, irrigation, and hard work.

Would anyone care about local flower? Would we be supported in our endeavours? Can we really make a go of this farming thing as a career?

3 years ago we doubled our flower plot. 2 years ago we doubled last years plot. 1 year ago we doubled up again. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Flowers found us when we were desperately looking for something to help keep our dream of farming alive.

This should come as no surprise. Today I want to introduce you to Island Flower Farm. This is us. We have officially changed names.

Hire us for your wedding flowers and you can say you’ve got “Island Flower Farm” on your vendor team

Visit us at the Farmers’ Market for a fresh bouquet of flowers in the summer months or seasonal wreaths in the winter months

Take a drive up to our farm stand open every Sunday during the growing season for some Island grown blooms

And stay tuned for Island Flower Farm workshops and farm tours next year
